Dr. Andreas Lermann (Managing Director Munich Aerospace) participated as a discussion partner on the panel “Space and Security.” He was joined by Juliana Süß (German Institute for International and Security Affairs) and Major General Michael Traut (Commander of the German Armed Forces Space Command). The panel highlighted the growing importance of space as a field of action for security and geopolitics. As part of this discussion, Andreas Lermann emphasized the growing role that space technologies play in Europe’s civil and security infrastructure and, with it, the responsibility that this entails for research and technology development. Today, space is no longer just a place of scientific discovery, but a critical component of national and international security architectures.

Thematic focus of the panel discussion

The debate focused in particular on:

  • The strategic importance of space
Space was identified as an increasingly strategically relevant area in which geopolitical tensions are becoming just as apparent as the need for joint security measures.
  • Cyber and physical threats in space
In addition to traditional security policy issues, attacks on satellite systems, sabotage, cyberattacks, and the vulnerability of critical infrastructure are coming into focus.
  • International legal and cooperation issues
Geopolitical changes and international legal frameworks were identified as essential elements for shaping resilient space security.

Participation in this high-profile panel underscores Munich Aerospace’s commitment to actively shaping the discourse on the future of aerospace. At a time when space technologies are not only of scientific interest but also a security-relevant reality, Munich Aerospace remains committed to contributing to a responsible, innovative, and cooperative space ecosystem.
