Forum Munich Aerospace – EGNOS V3: the next generation satellite-based augmentation system to support civil aviation operations in Europe

Speaker

  • Dr. Thomas Fuhrmann, EGNOS V3 Algorithm and Performance Engineer, Airbus Defence and Space
  • Julian Daubrawa, EGNOS Performance Engineer, Airbus Defence and Space

About

EGNOS V3 is the next generation of the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) developed by Airbus for ESA. As a satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS), it allows improving the GNSS user performance for navigation by providing correction and integrity data sent to a user receiver via a geostationary satellite. EGNOS can be used for safety-of-life applications in aviation such as final approaches with vertical guidance. In addition to the currently operational EGNOS V2 single-frequency and GPS-only service, EGNOS V3 will also provide a dual-frequency service augmenting both GPS and Galileo satellites.

In this presentation, an overview of the different EGNOS segments will be given, along with the approach how EGNOS message data is used by an SBAS receiver. In addition, the results of a recent experimentation campaign will be presented in which Airbus generated a very first EGNOS dual-frequency signal received by various test user receivers across Europe.
