Mission Statement

Munich has enjoyed a reputation as an international center of research and technology in the area of aeronautics and space travel for decades. The renowned universities located here, research institutes and industrial companies offer opportunities for development that, taken together, give rise to a unique concentration of activity. The Munich aerospace region consists of an unbroken chain of innovation that spans from basic research in mathematics and the natural sciences to system integration engineering and on to technical implementation. A multitude of aerospace supply industries in the Munich area enriches available technology capabilities in a manner that is unique in Europe.

The Technical University Munich (Technische Universitaet Muenchen, TUM), the University of the German Armed Forces (Universitaet der Bundeswehr Muenchen, UniBwM), the German Aerospace Center, an incorporated association (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V., DLR) with accompanying institutes located in Oberpfaffenhofen, as well as the Bauhaus Luftfahrt e. V. ( an incorporated association and aeronautics think tank, BHL) have joined forces to create a joint research, development and academic center, Munich Aerospace, for the purpose of pooling key competencies in the areas of aeronautics and space travel. By combining research, teaching, graduate programs and assistance, and a scholarship program offered by Munich Aerospace, it will be possible for the first time in Germany to unite the research and teaching efforts of a state university, a federal university and two non-university research institutions.

The goals of the association are especially served by the concentration of the various types of scientific and technical expertise, the identification of common research goals and research priorities, and the development of Munich as a center of scientific research into an attractive European academic center for aeronautics and space travel.

The association is highly dedicated to the exchange of ideas between research, teaching, politics, and business. The association fulfills its goals by promoting education and further education of young scientists by means of its own activities and close cooperation with universities and research institutes, and moreover, by coordinating research and development efforts of the partners.
